The Thomas Lakes Trailhead (Trail #1958) serves as the access point for Thomas Lakes and the Mount Sopris trail in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness, located south of Carbondale and Basalt in Pitkin County. The trail is a 3.6-mile dirt path that leads to a group of natural lakes situated in a glacial cirque beneath the twin summits of Mount Sopris. Hikers typically find this a moderate, intermediate hike suitable for day trips or as a base for backpackers summiting Mount Sopris. The trail ascends from a starting elevation of approximately 8,640 feet to the lakes at 10,200, 10,288 feet, gaining roughly 1,600 feet. The route follows an old jeep road initially before transitioning to a trail through meadows and forest. Views include the lakes, wooded hills, and the Roaring Fork Valley. The trail is popular, dog-friendly, and accessible via Dinkle Lake Road (from West Sopris Creek Road) or Prince Creek Road. Parking is available at the trailhead. While the wilderness boundary begins just before the first lake, the trail itself is well-defined. Fall hiking from September through November offers foliage, though snow is possible at higher elevations.
