Trail 419

Trail 419, also known as the Ridge 70 Trail, is a difficult hike located near Gunnison, Colorado, within the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests. The trail begins at the parking area adjacent to the old Irwin Lodge on Irwin Lodge Road (Forest Service Road #826.1C). It is a point-to-point route that climbs east with a consistent grade before flattening out as it approaches the ridgeline. The trail splits off to the left approximately half a mile from the start, marked by rock cairns, and eventually merges with the Scarp Ridge Trail #421. The elevation gain leads to a saddle at approximately 11,600 to 12,024 feet. The route passes through aspen groves and conifer forests. Wildlife is present, and wildflowers are notable in spring and summer. The trail is accessible year-round, though hikers should prepare for variable mountain weather, including potential ice or snow in winter and thunderstorms in summer. Parking is available at the trailhead.
