Trail 421

Scarp Trail 421 is a short, strenuous singletrack located in the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests near Gunnison and Crested Butte. The trail begins at an intersection with Ridge 70 Trail and climbs a steep, grassy hillside covered in wildflowers during spring and summer. It switchbacks sharply to the ridgeline, then follows the ridge to a wooden post marker at the summit of Scarp Ridge, which sits at the boundary of the Raggeds Wilderness. The trail dead ends at this point. The trail is rated difficult due to the steep elevation gain and rugged terrain. It is approximately 1.06 to 2 miles long, with an estimated completion time of 42 minutes to 1 hour. Parking is available at the trailhead. The trail is accessible year-round, from January through December, and is used in both directions. Wildlife, including mule deer, has been observed in the area. Hikers should be prepared for a strenuous climb and potential congestion on the Ridge 70 intersection. Always observe wildlife from a safe distance.
