The Van Tuyl Trail is a moderate, approximately 4.1-mile loop located in Gunnison, Colorado. The route encircles the historic Van Tuyl Ranch at the north end of town, offering a mostly flat terrain with hard-packed gravel and dirt surfaces. Hikers typically complete the trail in about two hours. The path runs alongside the Gunnison River, passing through pastures with views of the surrounding Palisades and Fossil Ridge Wilderness. The trail is mainly exposed, providing open views of grassy areas and mountains. Wildlife sightings often include cows, horses, ducks, and birds. The trail allows leashed dogs and mountain bikes. Amenities include parking, restrooms (including port-a-potties), hand-carved benches, and picnic tables. Some sections near shaded areas or intersections can be muddy or icy. The trail is open for visitation from September through November, though it remains accessible in winter when plowed.
