Vega Reservoir is a high-altitude fishing destination located on the northern edge of Grand Mesa in Mesa County, Colorado, at an elevation of 8,000 feet. The reservoir offers easy access and gentle terrain, making it suitable for anglers of all skill levels. Primary fishing occurs from April through October, with optimal conditions typically found in summer when water temperatures stabilize in the upper 50s to low 60s. The fishery is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which plants upwards of 100,000 trout annually, resulting in active populations of rainbow trout, including both recent stockers and larger holdovers. Snake River Cutthroat and Cutbows are also present. Anglers should be prepared for afternoon weather shifts, specifically high-velocity wind gusts that can create hazardous whitecap conditions on the 900-acre water body, as well as the threat of sudden thunderstorms. Parking is available, and the location is pet-friendly.
