About

Weminuche Wilderness is a 499,771-acre designated wilderness area in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado, managed by the U.S. Forest Service across the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests. It is the largest wilderness area in the state, covering nearly three-quarters of Rhode Island's size. The region features high alpine basins, jagged peaks exceeding 13,000 and 14,000 feet, and approximately 470 miles of trails. Weminuche Pass sits at 10,600 feet and marks the lowest point along the Continental Divide within this wilderness. Fall hiking here runs from September through November, offering moderate difficulty with typical durations around two hours. The terrain includes rocky and uneven sections, requiring a moderate level of physical fitness for elevation changes. Aspen groves turn golden yellow during this period, contrasting with coniferous forests of spruce and mixed tree stands. The air is generally cool and crisp, with potential snowfall in late autumn. Access points include parking availability and pet-friendly policies. Specific trails, such as Weminuche Trail #818 near Thirty Mile Campground and the Pine River Trail, offer defined routes through mixed aspen and spruce stands above the Rio Grande Reservoir. Camping is permitted, with options ranging from campsites to dispersed camping and huts.
