The West Elk Wilderness in Gunnison, Colorado, offers moderate fall hiking from September through November. This 176,412-acre area within the Gunnison National Forest features elevations between 7,000 and over 13,000 feet. Trails wind through aspen groves that turn gold in September and coniferous forests. Hikers typically spend about two hours on the trail, though routes vary in length and elevation gain. The terrain is generally moderate with some steep sections and uneven surfaces. Wildlife, including thousands of elk and deer, mountain passes, beaver ponds, and volcanic rock formations known as the Castles, are visible along the paths. Parking is available at trailheads, and pets are permitted on the trails. Some areas have primitive campsites and vaulted toilets. The wilderness is remote with little visitation outside of fall hunting season.
