Western Rim

The Western Rim is a moderate 6.1-mile hiking trail located near Fruita, Colorado, on the Western Slope. The trailhead is accessible via Exit 2 off Interstate 70, leading to a parking lot in Rabbit Valley. At an elevation of 4,880 feet, the route offers consistent terrain with some variation, suitable for a typical duration of about three hours. The trail hugs the cliffs above the Colorado River, providing panoramic views of the river valley and surrounding desert landscape. Hikers encounter exposed cliffside sections and mixed terrain that includes flowing singletrack and small technical rock features. The area supports wildlife such as bighorn sheep, mule deer, and various birds along the cliffs. Spring and fall are the prime seasons for visiting due to mild temperatures ranging from 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit and ideal trail conditions after winter rain. Summer temperatures can exceed 90 degrees with little shade, while winter rides are possible despite variable snow and mud. The trail remains rideable when wet, a notable feature for the region. Parking is available at the designated trailhead.
