About

One thousand five hundred feet beneath Gold Mountain in Ouray, the Bachelor Syracuse Mine Tour invites visitors into a genuine producing gold and silver mine. For nearly a century, this historic operation yielded valuable ore, and today guests walk the actual workings of the Syracuse Level where miners once extracted and hauled material. The tour offers a clear window into turn-of-the-century hardships, allowing visitors to experience life as it was when mining built the San Juan Mountain communities.

Above ground, the site remains a hub of activity. The Miner’s Café serves hearty breakfasts featuring fluffy buttermilk pancakes and farm-fresh eggs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Visitors can pan for gold in a real stream flowing from the mountain or browse unique treasures in the Treasure Chest gift shop, which stocks mineral specimens, vintage carbide lanterns, locally-made jewelry, and the famous penny crusher.

The property also serves as the starting point for the Gold Mountain Via Ferrata, a guided climbing route offering views of the San Juan Mountains. Action Adventures provides family-owned horse trail rides, with livestock bred and raised locally to ensure repeat clients reconnect with familiar horses. Despite challenges like the recent Gold Mountain Fire, the mine continues to operate as a locally owned business, preserving an important piece of Ouray’s mining history for future generations.
