Governor Jared Polis declares a state of emergency as the Gold Mountain Fire consumes nearly 600 acres in Ouray County, triggering mandatory evacuations for Panoramic Heights and closing U.S. Highway 550.

“Volunteers will NOT be allowed to enter the area to provide assistance.”
That’s the warning from the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office, delivered in plain English on social media as the Gold Mountain Fire continued to chew through nearly 600 acres of rugged terrain. If you’re sitting in your house in Panoramic Heights and decide to wait out the flames, you’re on your own. No paramedics, no volunteer firefighters dragging hoses up steep switchbacks, just you and the smoke.
The state of emergency declared by Governor Jared Polis isn’t just bureaucratic paperwork. It shifts the gears of response, pulling in the Department of Public Safety and specialized teams to manage a fire that has already escalated from a manageable Type III incident to a major Type I operation. That means the heavy hitters are here.
The fire started Saturday afternoon, sparked when a tree fell on a power line near the Gold Mountain Ranch and the Bachelor Syracuse mine tour area off County Road 14. It’s private land, but the impact is very public. U.S. Highway 550 is shut from the Timber Ridge gas station to the Whispering Pines bridge. If you’re trying to get to Ridgway or head north toward Ouray, you’re looking at a detour or a standstill.
The mandatory evacuation orders hit hard on the eastern side of the highway. Lake Lenore, Panoramic Heights, Redstone Road, and Peck’s Trailer Park are cleared out. The City of Ouray itself isn’t under evacuation yet, but officials note that status could flip if the wind shifts or the fire jumps containment lines.
“Extremely steep and rugged terrain will make some prevention activities difficult,” the sheriff’s office noted. The fire is lying low in some spots, hiding in the canyons, but it’s still riding the wind. And the wind is the enemy right now. Strong southwest gusts are pushing up to 40 miles per hour at higher elevations. Humidity is sitting at a dry 15 percent.
That combination — dry air, high winds, and steep slopes — creates a recipe for rapid spread. Another red flag warning is in effect for Sunday, meaning conditions aren’t getting better; they’re staying volatile.
For folks displaced by the fire, the immediate need is shelter. The Ridgway Secondary School has been set up as the primary evacuation center. It’s a practical choice, sitting just outside the immediate danger zone but close enough for residents to keep an eye on the situation. All evacuation traffic is funneling north, away from the highway closure points.
Local leadership is on the ground. Ouray Fire Chief Adam Kunz and County Sheriff Justin Perry are running the show as incident commanders. They’re managing a critical incident management team that’s taking over from the initial Type III crews. The State Department of Fire Control and a Bureau of Land Management Type III crew are already on-site, with more expected to arrive Sunday morning.
No structures have been lost yet. That’s a relief for the homeowners in Peck’s Trailer Park and the residents of Redstone Road, but it’s not a guarantee. The fire is 571 acres and growing. The cause is still under investigation, though the tree-on-power-line theory is the leading candidate.
The question for locals isn’t just whether the fire will stop, but how long it takes. With winds expected to decrease after sunset Sunday, there might be a brief window to breathe. But the dry, breezy weather is forecast to continue into the night.
As the state takes over and the Type I team settles in, the focus shifts from containment to protection. The infrastructure is there, the schools, the highway, the command posts. What’s needed now is time and, hopefully, a drop in the wind.
“We are managing the fire,” Sheriff Justin Perry said, emphasizing the active command structure. “But the terrain and the wind are dictating the pace.”
It’s a stark reminder that in the high country, nature still sets the schedule.
