Aspen Thrives with High End Retail Despite Subpar Ski Season

Aspen's fashion scene flourishes with new store openings and events from major luxury brands, despite a lackluster snow season.

As I stand on the corner of Hunter and Cooper, the sound of clinking glasses and muffled laughter drifts out of the Marfa Stance boutique, its prime location a block from the gondola making it a hotspot for après parties, even on a subpar ski day. The smell of freshly brewed coffee wafts from a nearby café, enticing passersby to come in from the chill, and the sight of people bundled up in luxurious outerwear, from Moncler to Marfa Stance, is a reminder that, even in a lackluster snow season, fashion always finds a way to shine. What do you do in Aspen when the skiing is subpar? You shop, you party, and you make the most of the high-end retail experience that this town has to offer.

This past winter, despite the uncooperative weather, Aspen's fashion scene thrived, with major brands opening stores, staging global fashion shows, and hosting pop-ups that drew in the style-obsessed. It's worth the drive to Aspen just to experience the vibrant atmosphere that permeates the town, even on a slow ski day. If you look closely, you'll notice that the town's boutiques and pop-ups are not just about selling products, but about creating an immersive experience that showcases the brand's personality and aesthetic. The way these brands engage with their customers is warm and inviting, making customers feel like they're part of something special.

One of the most notable openings was that of Foundrae, the fine-jewelry brand, on Hyman Avenue. The store's interior is a masterclass in design, with gorgeous medallions hanging on the walls behind glass, each representing a tenant that allows the wearer to create custom pieces that hold meaning – "modern heirlooms" as the brand refers to them. The color-coordinated books lining the shelves along the ceiling of the green walls add a touch of whimsy, while the creative home goods displayed in the back of the quaint space make for thoughtful gifts. And then, of course, there's the "mouse house," a delightful surprise that proves no detail was left unconsidered. This is not your average jewelry store, and it's setting a new standard for how brands create retail experiences in Aspen.

The arrival of Chanel on Hyman Avenue in February was a major event, with the launch of Matthieu Blazy's first collection in March drawing a fashionable crowd, all eager to get their hands on a piece of the new creative director's initial creations. The sight of a line forming outside the store on launch day was an unusual one for Aspen, but the brand's enduring appeal is clearly evident in the excitement surrounding its launch. As the seasons change, it will be interesting to see how the boutique evolves, and what other fashion happenings it will host. You can feel the excitement building, as the fashion community in Aspen awaits the next big thing.

Burberry's pop-up at Hotel Jerome in March was another highlight of the season, with the heritage brand's iconic check pattern outfitting the hotel's courtyard for a chic few days of British-born style. The company's trenches and scarves seemed to be everywhere, and this ubiquity speaks to the brand's influence on the town's fashion scene. And then, of course, there's the arrival of Arc'teryx, the technical skiwear-turned-street-style juggernaut, which opened a standalone store on Cooper Avenue. Once mostly a line for serious athletes, the brand has somehow become a status symbol among hipster New Yorkers, and its presence in Aspen marks a significant shift in the town's fashion landscape.

As I walk through the streets of Aspen, taking in the sights and sounds of the town's vibrant fashion scene, I'm struck by the possibilities that emerge even in a lackluster snow season. The smell of freshly cut wood wafts from a nearby construction site, and the sound of construction underway signals growth and transformation in the town. And as the seasons change, and the town prepares for a new wave of visitors, it will be interesting to see what other fashion happenings emerge, what other brands and designers make their mark on this unique and captivating town. The sound of laughter and music drifts through the air, a lingering echo of the joy and beauty that can be found in the unlikeliest of places.
