Cougar Ridge Trail Connects Vail and Minturn for Hikers and Riders

Aspen —If you’ve been wondering whether the "summer Minturn Mile" is actually worth the leg burn, the answer is a resounding yes. The Vail Daily’s latest "Trail of the Week" spotlights Cougar Ridge, a five-mile singletrack that cuts a direct line between the back bowls of Vail Mountain and the town of Minturn.

This isn’t a casual stroll. The trail drops roughly 2,800 feet over that five-mile stretch, threading through open meadows and dense pine forests. For hikers, the route offers a steady climb toward Lionshead Rock, a prominent landmark that overlooks the Eagle River Valley. The hike to the rock takes about two hours, providing expansive views of the surrounding peaks.

Mountain bikers have their own reasons for loving this corridor. Cougar Ridge is considered one of the Vail Valley’s signature descents. The upper section starts gently but quickly flows into 1.75 miles of fast, purpose-built singletrack. This section was completed by McGill Trails in partnership with the Vail Valley Mountain Trails Alliance and the U.S. Forest Service. Riders need to stay alert, as the path is shared with hikers and trail runners.

For those who prefer to climb rather than descend, the trail can be ridden uphill from the Minturn side. It’s a long, steep ascent that demands physical stamina, but riders who enjoy sustained climbing will find it rewarding. The Vail Recreation District plans to showcase the route during the Cougar Ridge Classic on Sept. 26, 2026, featuring a 26K point-to-point race from Vail to Minturn and a new 14K course starting at Eagle’s Nest.

Logistics matter for this adventure. The trail can be accessed via a shuttle or as part of a larger loop. Parking is available at the Vail Village or Lionshead garages, or at the U.S. Forest Service lot outside Minturn on U.S. Highway 24. The Game Creek trailhead in Minturn has limited space and often fills up, so starting and ending your day near the Minturn Saloon is a smart move. That’s where locals finish their backcountry adventures with food and a margarita, keeping up a winter tradition even in the heat of summer.

The season for this route is mid-summer and fall, making it a prime target for folks looking to escape the crowds before the snow flies. Whether you’re testing your endurance on the singletrack or just chasing the view from Lionshead Rock, Cougar Ridge delivers a mix of climbing, flow, and descent that defines the Western Slope experience.
