Cooper Puckett's name is on the national championship title — he won the slalom event in Vail. The 23-year-old from Steamboat Springs took the top spot, with fellow Steamboat athlete Jett Seymour coming in second.

This isn't a surprise — Puckett has World Cup experience, scoring points in his slalom debut in Levi, Finland. But he's had a tough season, fighting for starts and missing out on the Olympics. Puckett's family has a history of Olympic competition, his dad and uncle were both Olympians.

Puckett didn't start strong; he was 13th after the first split. But he found his rhythm on the lower part of the course, raising his hands in celebration when he saw the green light at the finish.

Jett Seymour, who won the slalom title in 2022 and 2023, was close behind Puckett. He said it's fun to compete against the best in the country, and he's glad to see younger athletes pushing the veterans. Seymour finished 0.62 seconds behind Puckett.

The two Steamboat athletes have a history with Vail - they used to see it as a rivalry. But now, they say it's all love. Puckett even admitted he's never been a fan of Vail, but he enjoys competing in Colorado.

The national championships brought together the best skiers in the country. Alex Krupka from Ski and Snowboard Club Vail had a notable performance, moving up 10 spots to finish 17th. Krupka said he wasn't sure how much he'd be skiing slalom next year, so he just tried to have fun.

Krupka's attitude is a good reminder. these athletes are neighbors, folks around here. They're not just competing for themselves, but for their communities.

The championship win is a big deal for Puckett, it's a redemption of sorts after a tough season. He said it feels amazing to end the season on a high note. Make no mistake, this win will boost his confidence going into next season.

Puckett's journey to the top wasn't easy; he had to fight for starts and deal with disappointment. But he persevered, and it paid off. The short version: Cooper Puckett is a national champion, and that's a big deal for Steamboat Springs.

Read that again - a local athlete, trained in part by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, just won a national title. That's what we're talking about here.

The community will be watching Puckett's next move. this win will put him in the spotlight. Worth watching: how he handles the pressure and expectations that come with being a national champion.

Puckett's win demonstrates the strength of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, which has produced multiple talented athletes. As the season comes to a close, Puckett has a long career ahead of him, with this national title marking a significant milestone.

The question on everyone's mind now, what's next for Cooper Puckett?
