As the sun begins to set over the Yampa Valley, casting a warm orange glow over the Snow Bowl Steamboat venue, the sound of live music drifts through the air, mingling with the smell of food and drinks from the surrounding vendors, and you can feel the excitement building among the crowd gathered for the Free Summer Music Fest. The venue, nestled in the heart of Steamboat Springs, is about to come alive with the sounds of local and national musicians, all performing at no cost to attendees, thanks to the support of local sponsors and community partnerships. If you look closely, you'll notice the diverse crowd, made up of locals and visitors alike, all united by their love of music and community.

This season, Steamboat's free summer concert series is expanding, adding a second weekly series, dubbed "Sunday Sessions," which will highlight local musicians, and continuing its Wednesday night tradition of hosting national touring acts. The result is a total of 35 shows, featuring about 40 bands, that will take the stage throughout the summer. You can feel the energy and anticipation building as the community prepares for another exciting season of music and entertainment.

The season kicks off on Sunday, May 24, with "Waking The Giant," a multi-band kickoff event scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m., featuring Cig Pope & The Holy Smokes, Jubilingo, and headliner Constant Change. As the music begins, the crowd will be treated to a unique blend of sounds and styles, all while enjoying the beautiful surroundings of the venue. Throughout the summer, concerts will run twice weekly, on Wednesdays and Sundays, regardless of weather conditions, with Wednesday performances starting at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday shows running from 5 to 8 p.m.

Snow Bowl General Manager Nikki Knoebel notes that "The Snow Bowl Free Summer Music Fest has grown into the place to be on Wednesdays," and this year, they're taking it up a notch with two nights each week, showcasing a mix of local favorites and national acts. It's more than just music, she says, "it's food, drinks and a fun night out for the whole community." As you walk through the venue, you'll notice the variety of food and drink options available, all of which are designed to enhance the overall experience of the event.

The concerts are supported by Family Bowl, a nonprofit established in 2023, which previously provided nearly 22,000 free meals to local residents during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization partners with the venue to keep the concert series free while also raising funds for other local causes. This summer, for $5, guests can either rent a chair or bring their own seating, with proceeds benefiting Routt County Crisis Support. You can see the impact of this partnership in the way the community comes together to support one another.

Sponsors for the free concert series include Crazy 88 Ranch, Billo, Steamboat Radio, Schmiggity's, Northwestern Millwork, GioVanni Construction, 1Off Performance, and The Green Company, among others. As you look around, you'll notice the presence of these local businesses, all of which are contributing to the success of the event. Concertgoers are encouraged to bike, walk, or use Steamboat's free bus system to get to the venue due to limited on-site parking. Overflow parking after 6 p.m. will be available at Riverside Plaza, and no outside food or drinks are allowed at the concerts.

The 2026 lineup is diverse and exciting, with a range of local and national acts scheduled to perform throughout the summer. On Wednesdays, you can catch acts like Heads All Empty, Boot Juice, and High Step Society, while Sundays will feature local musicians and other special events. The season will wrap up with another extended event, "Putting The Giant to Sleep," on Sunday, September 20, featuring Giant Walking Robots, Wake Up & Live — a Bob Marley tribute — and headliner Deadphish Orchestra.

As the summer months approach, the community is eagerly anticipating the return of the Free Summer Music Fest. With its unique blend of music, food, and community, this event is sure to be a highlight of the summer season. If you're looking for a fun and entertaining way to spend your Wednesday and Sunday evenings, look no further than Steamboat Springs. The sound of music and laughter will fill the air, and the smell of food and drinks will waft through the crowd, creating a truly unforgettable experience. As the sun sets over the Yampa Valley, the music will continue to play, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend.
