A registered nurse at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center shares tips for a comfortable hospital delivery, including packing a hospital bag with essentials and creating a birth plan.

The sun rises over the Rocky Mountains, casting a warm glow over the Western Slope as expectant parents prepare for the arrival of their little ones. In the midst of excitement and anticipation, it's easy to overlook the essentials that can make a hospital delivery more comfortable. Michelle Erps, a registered nurse in the birth center at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center, advises parents to pack a hospital bag with items that promote relaxation and reduce stress.
A pillow from home, for instance, can be a comforting companion during labor. Erps notes that while hospitals provide pillows, they may not be as cozy as those from your own bed. And if your partner plans to spend the night with you, consider bringing an extra pillow to ensure they get a good rest too. Linens are available for the bed or pull-out chair, but patients are welcome to bring their own.
Here's the thing though: every parent is unique, and what brings comfort to one may not be the same for another. That's why Erps recommends creating a written birth plan, which outlines your preferences for pain management, labor specifics, and other aspects of the delivery process. This plan can be changed at any time, even during labor, and hospital staff will work with you to ensure your wishes are honored.
As you pack your hospital bag, don't forget to include toiletries, such as your favorite soap, shampoo, and toothbrush. While the hospital provides these essentials, having your own can make you feel more at home. Electronics like Bluetooth speakers or a streaming device can also be a nice distraction during labor, allowing you to play soothing music or watch your favorite shows. And, of course, don't forget your cell phone and charger - the hospital has extras, but it's always a good idea to bring your own.
Picture this: you're in the hospital, surrounded by the beeps and whirs of medical equipment, and you're trying to focus on the arrival of your baby. A small hand-held fan can be a nice distraction, providing a gentle breeze to calm your nerves. Games or cards can also be a great way to pass the time, whether you're waiting for labor to progress or enjoying some quiet time with your partner.
Not exactly what you'd expect to find on a hospital bag checklist, but Erps suggests considering items that promote relaxation, such as battery-operated candles or essential oils. These can help create a calming environment, making the delivery process less stressful and more enjoyable. And, as you prepare to head home with your new baby, don't forget to pack going-home clothes for both you and your little one - loose, comfortable clothing is best, especially for mom.
As you finalize your hospital bag, Erps reminds parents to include a few more essentials: a breast pump, if you plan to breastfeed, and a car seat to ensure your baby's safe transportation home. The hospital offers hospital-grade breast pumps for rent, and staff will be happy to help you set it up and ensure it's working properly. And, while you can make an appointment at the local fire department to have your car seat installed, hospital staff will check to ensure the baby is securely fastened in before you head out.
The hospital room is quiet, the only sound the soft beeping of machines and the gentle hum of the air conditioner. A new mom holds her baby close, feeling a sense of peace and contentment wash over her. It's a moment she's been waiting for, and one that will stay with her forever. As she looks around the room, she notices the small touches that made her hospital stay more comfortable - the pillow from home, the soft music playing in the background, and the gentle breeze from the hand-held fan. These may seem like small things, but they made all the difference in her delivery experience.
