Durango, CO: **The Animas River Trail corridor between 29th Street and Demon Bridge reopened on Aug. 28 as the city begins Phase 2 of its trail improvement project, which will include constructing new Demon Bridge abutments in preparation for next spring’s bridge installation.
Phase 2 also includes rebuilding the spur trail between the Animas River Trail and Rio Vista Circle with improved grades, surface enhancements, drainage work, and additional tree plantings.
Vegetation clearing on the west side of the river will continue to meet environmental permit requirements protecting the endangered New Mexico Meadow Jumping Mouse. Specialists are overseeing the work to discourage the establishment of winter hibernation nests within the project area.
The Rea Trail will remain open between the south end of Riverview Drive and the access corridor connecting Rio Vista Circle and north Riverview Drive, though the spur trail to Rio Vista Circle will stay closed during construction. Trail users should follow posted signage and exercise caution near active work zones.
Phase 1 included clearing, demolition, tree protection, electrical and fiber conduit installation, concrete pouring, and landscaping.
