Durango, CO: **The City of Durango Parks and Recreation Department has closed a section of the Animas River Trail between Animas City Park and the Oxbow Park and Preserve parking lot due to flood-related damage that has created unsafe conditions for trail users.
Recent river flows have undermined a portion of the trail, prompting the closure while staff assess the extent of the damage and determine necessary repairs. The closure is intended to protect public safety during the evaluation process.
Trail users are asked to avoid the affected section and use alternate routes until further notice. The public is encouraged to respect all posted closure signs and barricades.
The city will provide updates as additional information becomes available regarding the trail's condition and plans for reopening.
In addition to ongoing recovery efforts, the Parks and Recreation Department is offering free, temporary community childcare support today for families impacted by flooding. The service is available at the Durango Community Recreation Center until 5 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
The childcare support is intended to provide temporary assistance for parents and guardians who need time to address flood recovery needs, including cleanup and repairs, insurance appointments, housing and employment matters, and other related responsibilities. Families utilizing the service should bring a snack and water for their child.
This temporary assistance effort is informal community support and is not licensed childcare or part of the city’s Gametime Childcare program.
The city also announced that Parks and Recreation facilities, including the Durango Community Recreation Center, Chapman Hill, and Durango Gymnastics, have resumed normal operating schedules.
