The City Council held a public hearing on the proposed 2027 budget, planning to vote on ordinances on November 17 and finalize the budget on December 1.

Durango, CO: **City Council reviewed the City Manager’s Proposed 2027 Budget, which emphasizes investing in existing services while improving efficiency and effectiveness across municipal operations.

The proposed budget includes several efficiency measures, including reducing expenditures where possible based on actual spending trends, eliminating vacant positions when appropriate, and absorbing position reclassifications to help maximize resources while maintaining service levels.

The proposed budget reinforces the city’s commitment to completing important capital projects, maintaining high-quality services, and supporting employees through competitive compensation, benefits, and incentive programs that help attract and retain a strong workforce.

Council will vote on the consideration of budget ordinances at the next regular meeting on Nov. 17, and will cast a final vote on the 2027 budget at the Dec. 1 regular meeting.

At their regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m., held at council chambers, 949 East Second Ave., councilors:

  • Heard a presentation by the Early Childhood Council of La Plata County that seeks to allocate $350,000 of the 2027 Lodgers’ Tax to expanding and stabilizing childcare services in Durango through an educator stipend program.

  • Heard a presentation on the Transportation Department’s annual Ridership Survey done under a partnership with Fort Lewis College’s Sustainability by Design class. Ridership satisfaction was rated an 8.06 out of 10, with 35% of the 117 respondents agreeing that buses arrive on time and 45% agreeing that they feel safe on the bus. The survey helps the city better understand the needs of transit riders and gathers important demographic data.

  • Heard a presentation on the city’s Flock cameras and how the data for September related to the offense type, organizations seeking access to the data, custom or “hotlist” inquiries, vehicles, and examples of how the cameras helped address local incidents. In September, there were 412 total searches by Durango Police Officers, with the most common search being assault and battery searches, accounting for 26% of the total.

  • Received an update on the recent rain-caused flooding at the Wilson Gulch roundabout near the Maverik gas station in Three Springs and how the city’s Public Works department is responding to the mud and debris flowing across the road.

  • Voted to consider a new business item at a future meeting that would increase councilor salaries to $25,000 for newly elected councilors.
