Durango, CO: **The City of Durango invites residents to celebrate the 150th year of Colorado statehood this Saturday, Aug. 1.
Take a picture with the banners and flags downtown or visit 5 different locations to find celebratory treats. Locations include the City of Durango tent at the Farmer’s Market starting at 8 a.m., the Durango Welcome Center opening at 9 a.m., or the Durango Library opening at 9:30 a.m. Residents can pick up a cupcake, Colorado flag, stickers, the Power of Place magazine, and the Southwest Colorado passport for 4th graders as part of the celebration (while supplies last).
The Animas Museum will celebrate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with an open house, which is a great chance to see the Moments That Made Us Colorado 150 exhibit and pick up the 2026 Edition of History La Plata. You can also stroll by the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot or the Durango Herald front desk to find Power of Place magazine and Passports.
Colorado is called the Centennial State, as it was established on Aug. 1, 1876, when President Ulysses S. Grant signed the proclamation admitting Colorado as the 38th US state one hundred years after the founding of the United States of America. The State Legislature officially declared Aug. 1 as Colorado Day in March 1907.
