Durango, CO: **The City of Durango’s Historic Preservation Board has unanimously approved the Historic Alteration Certificate for the proposed City Hall improvements at the former Durango High School with conditions recommended by city staff.
As part of its approval, the board included the following conditions:
Specify how the historic Rose Garden plants will be safely removed and stored for continual care until they can be replanted.
Salvage the brick from the demolition of the rear later pool addition and boiler building to reuse for the reconstruction of the original 1917 north wall, since the difference in brick iron spotting is minimal and the brick has aged over time, producing a closer match than fabricating new brick.
The approved plans focus on preserving the building's historic character while making necessary repairs and improvements to support its future use as City Hall. Restoration efforts include preserving significant architectural features, reconstructing historic elements based on archival documentation, repairing deteriorated building components, and protecting important landscape features such as the Rose Garden.
The Historic Preservation Board reviews proposed changes to designated historic properties using the criteria established in the Land Use and Development Code, the Downtown Design Guidelines, and the federal Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. Following its review, the board determined that the proposed project meets the applicable historic preservation requirements.
The project will continue through the remaining development review and permitting processes before construction activities begin.
