Durango, CO: **The City of Durango will remove its two temporary Speed Management Plan demonstration projects during the first two weeks of September, weather permitting. Local contractors and city staff will perform the removals as the next step in the plan for these temporary projects.
The temporary demonstrations were installed on Goeglein Gulch Road (from Hillcrest Drive to the roundabout at Fort Lewis Drive) and Riverview Drive (between both connections with Animas Place) to test proposed traffic calming strategies and are not specifically being “piloted” for the streets on which they were temporarily installed. Following removal, the City of Durango Streets Division will restripe both roadways to their prior alignments in September.
Community feedback collected through on-site engagement and the recently closed public survey, along with speed data gathered during and before the demonstration period, will help the city evaluate the effectiveness of these traffic calming strategies as it finalizes the citywide Speed Management Plan.
“These demonstration projects gave us the opportunity to see how these strategies work on Durango streets and our unique context,” said Multimodal Manager Lily Oswald. “Removing them after the demonstration period is over is the next step in this process, and we’re grateful to everyone who shared their experience through the survey, emails, phone calls, and on-site engagement. This feedback will be critical to help shape future opportunities for speed management in Durango to enhance safety for all roadway users.”
The Speed Management Plan, independent of the demonstration projects, will be presented to Durango City Council for consideration of adoption via resolution during their regular meeting on Oct. 6.
