Durango, CO: **The City of Durango is conducting two temporary demonstration projects on city streets to test proposed traffic calming strategies as part of the Speed Management Plan process.
City staff is conducting community engagement while these temporary installations are deployed to collect feedback, including on-site engagement and a survey that is out now through August 31. This survey is intended to gauge the community’s experience of the speed management temporary demonstrations while traveling through the project area(s).
The data collected in these surveys will be used along with speeding data to inform the effectiveness of these traffic calming strategies on Durango’s roadways. The survey can be found by visiting the Engage Durango project page for the Speed Management Plan, linked below.
The demonstrations are installed on Goeglein Gulch Road (from Hillcrest Drive to the roundabout at Fort Lewis Drive) and Riverview Drive (between both connections with Animas Place).
The Speed Management Plan and these demonstration projects were funded by a Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, aimed at testing known best practices for improving safety on local roads. The plan includes a toolbox of strategies that follow national best practices, such as curb extensions, automated enforcement, and other methods; each has engineering, education, engagement, and enforcement components specific to each context. It will also establish a process for reporting and responding to concerns and outline associated costs with strategies and best applications.
The final plan was presented to City Council at the June 2 Study Session and will be considered for adoption via resolution in October of 2026. Go to the city's Speed Management Plan Engage Durango webpage to take the survey.
