The Yampa River reopens to recreation on October 30, 2026, while a seasonal fishing closure protecting mountain whitefish remains in effect through November 15.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado-October 29, 2026-The Yampa River will reopen to recreation Friday, October 30, following a closure that began July 1.

The reopening marks a return to river recreation after an extended closure prompted by river conditions, while a seasonal fishing closure remains in effect at the confluence of Fish Creek and the Yampa River to protect spawning mountain whitefish.

The July 1 closure marked the earliest river closure since 2012 and underscored the challenges of managing the Yampa River during periods of high-water temperatures and changing streamflow conditions.

The mandatory seasonal fishing closure remains in effect through November 15 at Fish Creek. It includes the pool where Fish Creek meets the Yampa River, Fish Creek upstream to the Rollingstone Drive Bridge (approximately 0.4 miles) and the Yampa River 100 feet upstream and 200 feet downstream from the confluence. Signs mark the closure area.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), in partnership with the City of Steamboat Springs, established the annual closure to protect mountain whitefish during spawning season. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the recurring closure in November 2024.

Mountain whitefish are one of only two native sport fish in northwest Colorado’s Yampa and White River drainages. Their population has declined to concerning levels, making the protection of spawning fish and habitat an important part of ongoing river health efforts.

River users should follow posted signs and respect the seasonal fishing closure. All other river recreation is permitted unless additional restrictions are announced.
