Survey crews will conduct fieldwork along 14 waterways in Steamboat Springs and Routt County through December 8, 2026, to support a FEMA floodplain mapping update.

**Steamboat Springs, Colorado-October 22, 2026-**Survey crews will be conducting fieldwork along waterways in the City of Steamboat Springs and surrounding unincorporated Routt County areas as part of a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) floodplain mapping update.

The survey work, currently under way and continuing through Dec. 8, weather permitting, will support a FEMA Physical Map Revision (PMR) project to update flood risk information and mapping using new and updated data. The Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) is leading the project on behalf of FEMA, with survey and mapping contractors CDM Smith and Flatirons Inc.

Survey crews will collect elevation data and other information, including photographs, at designated locations along 14 waterways and their tributaries. The work will help inform updated floodplain maps and provide current information about flood risk in the project area.

Crews will make every effort to remain on public lands and within public rights-of-way. In some locations, temporary access across private property may be necessary. If private property access is needed, a contractor or state employee will make a good-faith effort to contact the property owner in advance to request permission.

Survey activities will use instruments to collect data and are not expected to involve digging or disturbing areas along waterways. Property owners in affected areas are being notified about the upcoming work.

The project includes survey locations along Burgess Creek, Butcherknife Creek, Fish Creek, Slate Creek, Soda Creek, Spring Creek, Walton Creek and the Yampa River, among other waterways and tributaries, within the city and surrounding unincorporated Routt County.

Questions about the survey work may be directed to the Colorado Water Conservation Board project team. Program Manager Caitlin McDaniel can be reached at 720-854-3203 or by email. For more information about the project, visit Colorado Hazard Mapping.
