Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue plans prescribed pile burns at Howelsen Hill, Emerald Mountain, and above Bear Drive this fall and winter once six inches of snow accumulates.

**Steamboat Springs, Colorado-October 26, 2026-**Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR), in partnership with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, plans to conduct prescribed pile burns at several locations this fall and winter once at least six inches of snow is on the ground.

“Pile burning is an essential step in reducing hazardous fuels and lowering the risk of future wildfires,” commented Deputy Fire Chief Ian Satterfield. “These efforts help create safer conditions for our community by limiting the intensity and spread of potential fires while supporting the long-term health of our forests.”

Planned burn locations include:

  • Howelsen Hill

  • Emerald Mountain near Prayer Flag Road

  • The area above Bear Drive

Exact dates will depend on snow conditions and favorable weather. SSFR will provide at least 24 hours’ notice before each burn.

Residents may see smoke and flames from town, particularly in the morning and evening, and should expect fire crews and equipment in the burn areas. All burns will follow an approved burn plan and a state-issued smoke permit. Crews will remain on scene throughout each burn and monitor the piles until they are completely consumed.

Pile burning is an effective tool for reducing hazardous fuels, helping lower wildfire risk and supporting community safety. Smoke impacts will vary with weather conditions. Residents who are sensitive to smoke may want to keep windows closed on burn days and limit outdoor activity if smoke is present.

These are planned, permitted and staffed operations. SSFR appreciates the community’s understanding and support as crews work to reduce wildfire risk and maintain the safety of the community and surrounding open spaces.
