The annual Downtown Halloween Stroll will take place on October 31, 2026, from 5 to 7 pm, requiring a Lincoln Avenue closure from 2 to 8 pm.

**Steamboat Springs, Colorado-October 21, 2026-**No tricks, just treats! Downtown Steamboat Springs will transform into a Halloween hotspot on Saturday, October 31, as the annual Downtown Halloween Stroll fills Lincoln Avenue with costumed characters, candy and family-friendly fun from 5 to 7pm. To make room for the festivities, Lincoln Avenue/US 40 will close to through traffic beginning at 2pm, with detours expected to remain in place until approximately 8pm.

“Halloween is a great opportunity for our community to come together and have some fun, and we want everyone to enjoy the evening safely,” said Police Chief Mark Beckett. “With so many families and children filling downtown, we ask drivers to plan ahead, follow detours and stay alert, while trick-or-treaters use crosswalks, stay visible and look out for one another. A little extra caution goes a long way toward making sure everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.”

For nearly 40 years, this beloved community tradition has brought Halloween spirit to downtown, with local businesses and organizations lining Lincoln Avenue to hand out goodies to costumed kids of all ages. It’s a real treat for families, but motorists should plan ahead to avoid getting caught in a traffic jam that’s more fright than fun.

Event Access & ParkingParticipating businesses and organizations setting up along the roadway must contact Main Street Steamboat in advance for block assignments and venue access routes. Planning ahead will help avoid delays or being turned away from assigned spaces.

Vendor vehicles may access Lincoln Avenue via 7th Street between 3 and 4:45pm. After 4:45pm, no vehicles, including participating vendors, will be permitted on Lincoln Avenue.

No-parking signs will be posted in advance along side streets and on one side of Yampa and Oak streets. Main Street Steamboat will post no-parking signs on Lincoln Avenue 24 hours before the event. Vehicles left in designated no-parking areas will be towed.

Traffic Detours & Road ClosuresThe Lincoln Avenue/US 40 closure and detours will begin at 2pm and remain in place until approximately 8pm. During the closure, traffic will follow a circular detour, with eastbound US 40 traffic diverted onto Yampa Street and westbound US 40 traffic diverted onto Oak Street between 5th and 11th Streets. Lincoln Avenue will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so following the stroll.

The 5th Street Bridge will remain open to northbound traffic during the event. Drivers heading to Howelsen Hill, the Ice Arena or the Brooklyn neighborhood can turn right from Yampa Street to reach those destinations. Westbound US 40 traffic will not be able to turn left onto 5th Street to access Howelsen Park and must follow the circular detour. Motorists traveling to areas south of the river should consider using River Road.

Parking will be limited downtown during the event. Visitors are encouraged to bike, ride Steamboat Springs Transit (SST) or carpool.

Transit Service During the StrollSST will use emergency lanes along Yampa and Oak streets during the closure to keep buses moving. Temporary stops for eastbound SST routes will be located on Oak Street at 10th, 9th, 7th and 6th Streets. Westbound routes will stop on Yampa Street at 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th Streets. Buses will return to normal operations once Lincoln Avenue/US 40 reopens.

Additional buses will run on both ends of town to help transport visitors downtown and back. The westbound regional bus is expected to pass through town at approximately 4:40 and 5:40pm, with stops on Yampa Street at 7th and 11th Streets.

Halloween Safety TipsFamilies with children are encouraged to arrive at the beginning of the stroll and consider bringing strollers or wagons for tired trick-or-treaters. A lost-child reunification area will be located at 7th and Lincoln. Parents should identify this meeting spot with their children in case anyone gets separated.

With large crowds and plenty of little ghosts and goblins on the move, everyone should stay alert, be patient and follow posted detours and closures. As darkness falls, pedestrians can be harder for motorists to see. Keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp and reflective gear.

  • Use crosswalks and avoid darting across streets or alleys.

  • Put away phones, earbuds and other distractions.

  • Never assume drivers can see you.

  • Bicyclists should use front and rear lights and always wear a helmet.

  • Leave pets at home, as Halloween crowds can be frightening for even the friendliest four-legged companions.

With a little planning, everyone can enjoy a safe and spooktacular evening downtown. Have a fang-tastic Halloween!
