Billy Creek State Wildlife Area is a 5,498-acre habitat along the Uncompahgre River corridor between Montrose and Ridgway. Managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife for wildlife protection rather than general recreation, the site features meadows and low hills covered in montane shrubland. The area is known for birding, with migrating birds visible in multiple fields, and offers dry camping spots overlooking the meadows. Access is generally restricted to May through December, though a strip along the river corridor remains open year-round for hunting, fishing, and trapping. A valid hunting or fishing license or a separate SWA pass is required for everyone 16 and older to enter. Camping is typically limited to licensed hunters during big-game seasons, plus three days before and after each season. The elevation ranges from 6,254 to 9,046 feet.
