Blue Mesa Reservoir

Blue Mesa Reservoir is a large, high-elevation lake in Gunnison County, Colorado, located at 7,519 feet. It is the largest body of water in the state. The reservoir supports a productive fishery for lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and yellow perch. Access is straightforward for both boat and bank anglers. Several boat ramps facilitate vessel entry, while numerous access sites allow fishing from shore. Parking is available at these sites. The area is pet-friendly. Fishing activity occurs year-round, with specific seasons noted for different species: kokanee trolling peaks from May through July, trophy jigging occurs from August through mid-September, and ice fishing takes place from January through March. Special regulations include no bag limit for lake trout, though only one lake trout over 32 inches may be taken per day. Kokanee salmon have a bag limit of five fish and a possession limit of ten. Snagging kokanee is permitted from November 1 through December 31. The reservoir is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area.
