Canyons of the Ancients National Monument offers a moderate fall hiking experience in southwestern Colorado, approximately 6,426 feet above sea level. The monument covers 176,000 acres and contains the highest known density of archaeological sites in the United States. Hikers traverse canyons, mesas, and plateaus to view more than 8,300 documented sites, including villages, kivas, cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and ancient roadways. Estimates suggest over 30,000 additional sites remain unrecorded. Trails typically take about two hours to complete. The region is rich in Ancestral Puebloan history, with evidence of human connection spanning over 12,000 years. September through November provides comfortable temperatures for outdoor activity. Parking is available at designated areas, and the trails are pet friendly. Visitors should stay on marked routes to protect fragile archaeological resources. The landscape is a rugged desert environment, distinct from the forested high country of other Colorado destinations.
