About

Cataract Creek is a canyoneering and rock climbing destination located near Silverton, Colorado, close to County Road 7. The site features a deep, narrow watercourse with a sequence of rappels, primarily utilizing sandstone. The approach involves a 0.4-mile hike with 380 feet of elevation gain, taking 30 to 40 minutes. The technical section consists of 3 to 5 rappels, with the maximum drop being 110 feet. The overall experience typically takes 2 to 3 hours. The area is accessible year-round, though winter conditions require additional preparation. Parking is available on-site, and pets are permitted. The climbing difficulty is rated as moderate, with specific route ratings around 3C to II PG. A key practical detail is water level; the canyon is a narrow slot with potential for foot entrapment in v-slots, so climbers should check roadside water flow on County Road 7 before entering. The area is a confirmed nesting site for the Black Swift from late May to late September, and climbing during this period may disturb the birds. No permit is required.
