Second Gully is a popular ice climbing destination located near Silverton, Colorado, specifically in the Eureka area. The route climbs a fat, ice-choked gully on the east face of Peak 12,896. It is rated WI3/4, making it slightly more difficult than First Gully but easier than nearby routes like Goldrush or Whorehouse Hoses. The climb offers approximately 800 feet of stepped ice with minimal snow slogging. The approach from the parking lot is about half a mile and is usually well-packed, so snowshoes or skis are not always mandatory. Climbers should note that multiple v-threads are typically fixed in the ice, but they should remove them in the spring. Descent is recommended by walking off to the right at about three-quarters height, leading down snow-filled gullies to the base of Goldrush. The area is accessible year-round, though winter conditions include snow and ice. Parking is available at the base, and pets are permitted.
