The Cimarron River in Montrose, Colorado, is a moderate-elevation fishery situated at 8,000 feet. It offers accessible fly fishing and spin casting opportunities from April through October. The river system includes three forks, Middle, East, and West, and a tailwater section below Silver Jack Reservoir. Cold, clear water supports populations of wild brown trout, rainbow trout, and native cutthroat trout. Average fish size ranges from 10 to 12 inches. The river features shallow freestone sections and deep pools, with crystal-clear water that can be affected by spring snowmelt. Public access is available via Highway 50 and side roads, with parking provided in established areas. The Cimarron State Wildlife Area allows fishing access from July 1 through December 31, with parking in designated zones. Pets are permitted at most access points.
