The Eagle Rock Shelter Trail is a 0.6-mile moderate hike located near Delta and Hotchkiss, Colorado, in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The trail begins at a gravel parking lot and descends into the gorge, leading hikers past protected petroglyphs dated to 13,000 years ago. Beyond the rock art, wood steps lead down to the floodplains of the Gunnison River. The route is accessible via a dirt or gravel road suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles with moderate clearance. While the trail is open year-round, April through October offers the most reliable conditions, with winter visits requiring caution for snow and ice. The area supports diverse wildlife including mule deer, elk, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and river otters. The Gunnison River itself is a designated Gold Medal Trout Fishery. Parking is available directly at the trailhead, and dogs are permitted on the trail.
