About

The Gothic Mountain Out-and-Back is a difficult 7-mile hike located north of Crested Butte, Colorado. The trail begins at the Washington Gulch Trailhead on Trail 403 and climbs to a summit elevation of approximately 12,600 feet. Hikers typically complete the route in about five hours. The path starts with a relatively easy singletrack section through spruce and fir forests, featuring wildflower meadows in summer and fireweed displays in autumn. After roughly two miles, the trail reaches a junction near a cairn; hikers proceed left to continue the ascent. The final mile is characterized by steep, rocky slopes with loose scree and minimal shade. The trail offers 360-degree panoramic views of the Elk Mountain Range, including Mt. Baldy and Gothic Valley. Wildlife sightings often include pikas, deer, and chipmunks. Parking is available at the trailhead, located about a quarter-mile past the old closed parking area on Washington Gulch Road. The trail is accessible year-round, though winter conditions can affect accessibility.
