About

The Yule Pass Trail Out and Back is a 4.8-mile moderate hike in Crested Butte, Colorado, starting at the Paradise Divide trailhead. The trail begins at an elevation of 11,330 feet and climbs to Yule Pass at 11,691 feet, gaining only a few hundred feet of elevation. It is a foot-only route, closed to vehicles, bicycles, and horses. The terrain is generally flat with short ups and downs, described as a 'cruisy' trail rather than steep or technically challenging. However, the path skirts steep, rocky slopes, creating significant exposure that may unsettle those with a fear of heights. The trail is narrow in sections and can be washed out, requiring careful footing. Views include expansive vistas of the rugged green valley and surrounding peaks. Snow persists here longer than in most of the state, often into summer, which can make the route impassable. Access to the trailhead involves a drive; 4x4 is recommended for the Slate River Road segment, while AWD may suffice if driving carefully from Washington Gulch. Parking is available at the trailhead.
