About

The Grand Junction Off-Road 40 Grand Course is a 39.4-mile mountain biking loop starting and ending on Main Avenue in downtown Grand Junction. It serves as the event course for the annual 40 Grand race. The route connects the Lunch Loops trailhead and the Bangs Canyon trails complex, utilizing city, county, and state roads alongside dirt trails. The terrain includes historic Tabeguache doubletrack, technical singletrack sections like The Gunny Loop, Butterknife, Andy's, and Eagle's Tail, and notable features such as Widowmaker Hill. The course is rated difficult and demands significant endurance and technical skill, featuring step-ups, step-downs, and loose dirt climbs. Elevation gain totals approximately 5,616 feet with a maximum elevation near 6,598 feet. The loop typically takes about 13 hours to complete. Parking is available at the trailhead, and the route is pet-friendly. Some sections, specifically the lower Lunch Loops, do not allow e-bikes. Riders should carry ample water and nutrition, as the upper section is remote. The course is accessible from April through October.
