About

Gunnison Gorge Wilderness, located near Crawford on Colorado’s Western Slope, is a rugged canyon system carved by the Gunnison River. The area features a unique double-canyon structure with black granite and colorful sandstone. Hiking involves steep descents into the gorge, traversing piñon-juniper forests and sagebrush lowlands down to the river. Trails are typically unmaintained, rocky, and strenuous, with significant elevation changes ranging from roughly 574 to 2,775 feet depending on the specific route. The moderate difficulty context aligns with the challenging terrain and elevation gain. Fall (September through November) offers moderate temperatures, avoiding the extreme heat of summer and winter snow. Parking is available at trailheads, and the area is pet-friendly, though dogs must be kept under control. A free permit is required; hikers must sign in at the registration box at the trailhead. Access roads may require a 4WD vehicle, particularly after rain. Water sources are limited, primarily relying on the Gunnison River at the bottom of the gorge, so hikers should bring a filter. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
