Gunnison River - Black Canyon

The Gunnison River through Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, near Montrose, is designated as Gold Medal and Wild Trout Water. This stretch begins 200 yards downstream of Crystal Dam and supports large wild rainbow and brown trout. The fishing is technically demanding, characterized by strong year-round flows from Blue Mesa Reservoir releases, turbulent pocket water, and deep emerald pools. Access is difficult and limited to hike-in routes such as the Chukar, Duncan, and Ute trails, which descend 600 to 1,200 vertical feet through high desert terrain. The East Portal Road provides vehicle access but features a steep 16% grade with hairpin curves. Parking is available near the river. The season runs from April through October. Special regulations apply: use artificial flies or lures only with no bait; all rainbow trout are catch and release; brown trout have a daily bag limit of four and possession limit of eight. A Colorado fishing license is required. The area is pet friendly.
