About
Pulpit Rock Overlook is a hiking destination in Montrose, Colorado, situated on the southern rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. The site offers views of the Gunnison River and the canyon's topography. Two distinct trail options serve this location. The Pulpit Rock Overlook Trail is a 0.2-mile out-and-back route with approximately 32 feet of elevation gain, typically taking 0.5 to 1 hour to complete. It is rated easy and leads directly to a popular viewing area. A second route, the Pulpit Rock Overlook 184 Yards, is a short loop of roughly 323 meters (0.2 miles) with an elevation gain of about 24 meters (66 feet). This loop is often graded as difficult or easy depending on the source, with completion times ranging from 6 minutes to 2 hours. The overlook provides a vantage point of the river's 90-degree bend and contrasts smooth, vegetated slopes to the south with rockier terrain. Parking is available near the trailheads. Dogs are permitted on leash in designated areas, including the trails and parking zones. The site is accessible year-round.
