Hot Sulphur State Wildlife Area is a moderate fall hiking destination in Parshall, Colorado, located on the Western Slope. The area spans 22 acres and is divided into seven separate units, including the popular Lone Buck Unit and Pioneer Park. The elevation sits at 7,637 feet, with trails typically taking about two hours to complete. The hiking season runs from September through November, offering changing foliage and opportunities to spot wildlife such as mule deer, elk, moose, thrushes, warblers, and sapsuckers. Access is straightforward from Highway 40, with parking available on site. While the property size is small, it offers scattered restroom facilities and free primitive camping in designated areas. A valid hunting or fishing license, or a State Wildlife Area pass, is required for visitors aged 16 and older. The trails are generally well-marked and maintained, though some sections may be rocky or steep. Pets are permitted in the area.
