The North Fork of the Gunnison River is a 25-mile trout fishery extending from Paonia to its confluence with the main Gunnison River. Located in Delta County at an elevation of approximately 6,082 feet, the river offers moderate fishing difficulty with a mix of fast and slow water. The primary species are Brown Trout, averaging 12 to 16 inches, and Rainbow Trout. The lower elevation extends the fishing season from April through October compared to high-country tributaries, supported by strong stonefly and caddis populations. Access is limited because over 95 percent of the river corridor is private land. Public entry points include Paonia River Park, which provides a half-mile stretch within town, the Delta County Fairgrounds boat ramp near Hotchkiss, and the Gunnison Forks BLM Day Use Area at the confluence. A $3 per person fee applies at Gunnison Forks, while Paonia River Park and the Fairgrounds offer free access. Anglers must hold a valid Colorado fishing license, available 24/7 online or from local agents. The river serves as a critical flow reference for the main Gunnison; flows below 350 cubic feet per second allow experienced waders to cross upstream of the confluence, while spring runoff can push flows above 1,000 cfs from April through June. The water frequently muddies after rainstorms and during snowmelt, requiring attention to current conditions.
