Otto's Route is a classic multi-pitch trad climb on Independence Monument in Colorado National Monument, near Grand Junction. The route is historically significant, named for John Otto, who made the first ascent in 1911 by chopping steps and drilling holes into the soft sandstone. The climb consists of four pitches with a moderate difficulty rating, typically around 5.8+. The final pitch is exposed and leads to a summit with views of the surrounding desert. Climbers should bring double ropes for rappelling, as the descent requires multiple rappels. The area is known for its sandy rock and lack of crowds compared to other local climbing areas. Access is via a trailhead parking lot south of Grand Junction on Highway 340. Note that as of 2025, there may be a peregrine falcon nesting on the monument, so check for closures.
