About

The Ouray Via Ferrata is a moderate hiking and climbing route located in the Uncompahgre Gorge near Ouray, Colorado. It utilizes iron rungs and steel cables to allow pedestrians to ascend steep rock faces safely. The primary route, known as Downstream, begins off the Ice Park Loop Trail at the south end of the Funteer access trail. It crosses the Uncompahgre River via a 35-foot cable bridge, continues north along narrow ledges and blank rock sections, and ends just past the Upper Bridge. The route features over 4,000 linear feet of anchored cable and includes an ascending Sky Ladder at the north end. A 35-foot cable bridge spans the gorge at the start, and an optional Sky Climb bypasses the ladder for a steeper ascent. The trail is open to the public from May through October, typically between 8am and 4pm. Parking is available near the trailhead. The route is pet-friendly, though weight restrictions for unguided climbers (88, 265 lbs) apply. The typical duration is about 2 to 3 hours, depending on whether the optional Sky Climb or spine route are taken. The elevation is 8,061 feet. Gear can be rented in town, and guided services are available for those unfamiliar with the route or outside the standard weight range.
