About
Phil's World is a moderate hiking and mountain biking trail system located approximately three miles east of Cortez, Colorado. The trailhead sits on State Trust Land off Highway 160, across from the Montezuma County Fairgrounds. The network consists of over 27 miles of designated non-motorized trails, with 15 miles on Bureau of Land Management land and additional sections leased by the Southwest Colorado Cycling Association. The terrain is characterized as rolling mesa tops bisected by small canyons, featuring a mix of smooth singletrack and technical slickrock sections. Elevation at the trailhead is 6,306 feet. The system is directional, with loops generally ridden or walked clockwise to reduce congestion. Key features include the Rib Cage section, known for fast rolling terrain, and views of Sleeping Ute Mountain, La Plata Mountains, and Mesa Verde. The trail is open year-round and is typically busy with users. Parking is available at the main trailhead, which includes a kiosk and map. A daily user fee of $3 per person is collected in a paybox for non-members, though no additional entry fee is charged. Pets are allowed on the trail.
