Totten Reservoir State Wildlife Area is a moderate hiking destination located in Montezuma County, approximately three miles east of Cortez on U.S. Highway 160. The site sits at an elevation between 6,146 and 6,179 feet. Hikers access the area via County Road 29, turning north for one mile to reach the reservoir. The terrain consists of pinyon-juniper habitat and shoreline trails that lead to the northeastern corner, offering views of waterbirds. Water is a limited resource in this part of the Four Corners region, making bird concentrations notably high. The area records 234 species, with waterbirds being the primary attraction. A viewing scope is recommended for optimal observation. The hike typically takes about two hours and is classified as moderate in difficulty, suitable for those with some experience. Parking is available in gravel lots. The site is open year-round during daylight hours, from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. While the area is generally accessible in September through November, specific sections along the north shore close from March 1 to May 31. A valid hunting license, fishing license, or State Wildlife Area pass is required for visitors aged 16 and older. Dogs must be leashed unless actively hunting or during licensed field trials. Glass containers are prohibited throughout the area.
