About
The Rooster Trail is a short, rugged hiking route in Durango’s Horse Gulch area. It is a one-way trail that begins at the top of Mike's Climb and heads south. The hike covers approximately 1.6 to 1.8 miles with an elevation gain of roughly 620 feet. The route is rated difficult due to its steep, direct ascent from the start, which involves climbing straight up an embankment. The trail is less maintained than neighboring paths, often appearing rutted or poorly defined. Mid-trail sections pass through dense scrub oak that can encroach on the path. The descent features technical rocks, tight sections, and steep slabs. Parking is available at the trailhead. Dogs must be kept on a leash.
