San Juan National Forest provides moderate fall hiking on trails situated at an average elevation of 9,132 feet. The forest spans approximately 1.8 million acres in southwestern Colorado, extending from high-desert mesas to alpine peaks. Hikers typically spend about two hours on these trails, which are generally well-marked and maintained. The primary appeal is the seasonal display of aspen and conifer forests, offering distinct fall colors from September through November. The area supports day hikes and extensive backcountry opportunities, with the Colorado Trail passing through 88 miles of the forest. Accessibility is supported by available parking at various trailheads and pet-friendly policies. While historic flood events in October 2025 caused some road and trail damage, current conditions indicate that many trails remain open. The forest contains four wilderness areas: Weminuche, South San Juan, Lizard Head, and Hermosa. Visitors should anticipate varying weather conditions and high altitude effects.
