About
South Mineral Campground is a high-altitude site (9,841 feet) in the San Juan National Forest, located roughly two miles west of Silverton and four miles from U.S. Highway 550 via Forest Road 585. The campground consists of 26 sites that are first-come, first-served with no reservations. Most sites are shaded by spruce and fir trees and offer well-spaced layouts. The access road is a gravel route drivable by two-wheel-drive vehicles in dry conditions, though it becomes a four-wheel-drive road further west. Parking spurs accommodate equipment with wheels, including RVs up to 35 feet in length. The site is open from May through September. Amenities include restrooms and water access along South Mineral Creek, which runs adjacent to the campground. A waterfall is located just upstream from the site. The primary recreational feature is direct access to the Ice Lake Trail, a strenuous and steep three-mile hike leading above timberline. Fishing is available in Mineral Creek and nearby Clear Lake, which is a three-mile hike north of the campground. The area experiences high visitation and is busy during the open season.
