The Big Cheese Trail is a 3-mile moderate hike located in the Ridgway Area Trails System (RAT) on BLM land south of Ridway State Park. The trail climbs from approximately 7,115 to 7,570 feet, gaining about 445 feet over its length. It serves as the main connector from the trailhead to other routes in the system. The path consists of smooth singletrack winding through pinyon and juniper forest, with several switchbacks managing the ascent. Wildlife, particularly deer, is common along the route. The trailhead is accessed by turning right onto County Road 10 from the intersection of Highways 550 and 62, driving north for about 1.8 miles, then continuing half a mile to the trailhead on the left. Parking is available. The trail is generally open year-round, though some sources note closures between December 1 and April 30. Cell service is available. The trail is also used for mountain biking.
