About

Transfer Park Campground is a first-come, first-served site in the San Juan National Forest, situated 13 miles north of Durango on Forest Road 596. The facility covers 11 shaded acres above the Florida River and contains two loops with 25 total sites. The upper loop is mostly level, while the lower loop sits near the river with pull-through options and tent spots. Access to the water varies by site selection; outer sites require a short scramble down a small cliff, whereas inner sites offer ground-level access via a meadow path. The campground operates seasonally from May through September with an estimated visit duration of two hours. Facilities include parking for vehicles up to 35 feet, restrooms, and a camp host. There is no on-site water supply, so visitors must bring their own. Cell service is limited or unavailable, supporting an off-grid experience. The site allows pets and horses but prohibits motorized vehicles within the campground itself, though bicycles are permitted on nearby trails. A Stage II Fire Prohibition is in effect from July 1, 2026, through December 31, 2026, restricting open flames and requiring gas or liquid-fueled devices to be used in cleared areas. The terrain is moderately difficult, with some rough access roads and varied site layouts.
